Obituary – March 1, 1989
Smith, Mary K., 88, widow of Jonathan W. Smith, of Route 1, Martinsburg, died
Monday morning in the Hemet Valley Hospital, Hemet, Riverside County, Calif.
Born Dec. 3, 1900, in Berkeley County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel T
and Frances Ellen Westenhaver Brown.
She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters
of America.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ellen Dalzell of Hemet, Calif. and Martha C.
Miller, of Route 1, Hedgesville; a son, William C. Smith of Route 1; 14
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan W. Smith, who died Aug. 31,
1957; a son James B. Smith; a daughter, Elsie E. Brown; a sister, Helen Brophy;
and two brothers, J. Howard and Frank W. Brown.
Mass of Christian burial will be said Friday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church with the Rev. William J. Nolte Jr. as celebrant. Burial prayers
will be in the Tuscarora Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Brown Funeral Home Thursday evening 7 to
9 p.m. where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m.
The family will meet at the funeral home Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. before
going to the church.
