James B. Smith, Sr.
James Benjamin Smith, Sr., 48, well-known farmer, of Route 1,
was stricken while at work on his farm and was pronounced dead on arrival at
King’s Daughters Hospital at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
He was born in Berkeley County, December 18, 1918, son of the late John W. and
Lillie G. Collis Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Tuscarora Ruritan
Club, Isaak Walton League of America and the United Commercial Travelers.
Surviving are his wife, Mr. Laura Catrow Smith, at the home; step-mother, Mrs.
John W. Smith, Route 1; one son, James B. Smith, Jr., Route 1; two daughters,
Mrs. Patricia Ann Hess, 431 Virginia Avenue, and Wanda Jean Smith, at the home;
one grandchild, John Christopher Smith, Route 1; one brother, William C. Smith,
Route 1; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Brown, Route 1; two half-sisters, Mrs. Mary
Ellen Dalzell, Al Tahoe, Calif., and Mrs. Martha C. Miller, Biloxi, Miss.
Services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home by the
Rev. Lamar Neville, of Petersburg, a former pastor. Burial will be in the
Tuscarora Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today and Thursday from 7 to
9 p.m.
The family has requested that memorial remembrances take the form of
contributions to the Heart Fund.
Smith Rites
Rites for James Benjamin Smith, Sr., well-known farmer of Tuscarora, who died
Tuesday afternoon, were conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home
by the Rev. Lamar Neville, a former pastor. Burial was in Tuscarora Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harold Lee Cushwa, Paul Sencindiver, William (Buddy) Noll,
Americus Qualini, Paul Cogle and Charles Miller.
Members of the Tuscarora Ruritan Club attended the services in a group and
served as honorary bearers.
The services were largely attended and there were many flowers.
