Dayton J. Canby
Dayton James Canby, 74, of 120 South Raleigh street, died at 5
a.m. today in City Hospital after an extended illness.
Born October 24, 1901, in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late Samuel M.
and Martha Snyder Canby.
He was a boilermaker by trade with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, working
there for over 44 years before retiring in 1966. He was a member of the
Tuscarora Presbyterian Church serving as an elder of the church, member of the
B. & O Veteran Employees Association and the American Federation of Labor Union
No. 38, member of the Retired Men’s Club and, after retirement, worked with his
brother, Grant Canby, as a carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ada Stum Canby, at the home, whom he married
October 11, 1923; one son, Roy J. Canby, Johnstown, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Leon
(Jane C.) Bovey, 207 North Red Hill Road; five grandchildren, Dayton, Michael,
Denise and Dwight Canby, all of Johnstown; Lisa Bovey, 207 North Red Hill Road;
two brothers, Elisha Canby, Pasadena, Md.; Grant Canby, Route 1, Nollville; one
sister, Mrs. Henry (Marie) Franks, Gerrardstown; Ronald Bowers, of West Burke
street, who was reared by the Canby family; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Guy, Filmore, Earl, and Lee Canby, and one sister, Mrs. Russell (Mazie)
Shirley, preceded Mr. Canby in death.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church
with the Rev. William H. Jarrett officiating. Interment will be in Tuscarora
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
Brown Funeral Home.
The body will be moved to the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday for viewing until time
of the services. The family will gather at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Leon
Bovey, 207 North Red Hill Road, at 10:30 a.m. before proceeding to the church.
