Calvin C. Canby Sr.

Calvin C. Canby Sr., went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 19, 2005. He attended Berkeley County Schools. His work history included Schmidt Baking Company, Thieblot Aircraft and Corning Glass Works, Martinsburg. He retired in 1993 with 34 years with Corning. Calvin was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church, Martinsburg and attended Bethel Assembly of God. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Army during World War II.
In 1976 Calvin was named the Berkeley County Conservation Farmer of the Year. Since retirement, he has excelled in the care he has given to his Hereford cattle. Billy Bennett, local County Director for Farm Services, stated that "Calvin keeps his property in tip-top shape; that it is truly a showpiece through his relentless efforts and pride in the land God has given him".
Calvin was born Oct. 15, 1926, in Berkeley County, the son of the late Charles and Bertha Raney Canby. He s survived by his wife of 56 years, Imogene Barnhart Canby; three deeply devoted children, Dr. Joni S. Canby of Youngstown, Ohio, Pamela F. Canby and Calvin "Chip" Canby Jr., both of Martinsburg; and two brothers, Garnett S. Canby Sr. and Reginald Canby of Martinsburg. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Majorie Brichner and Pansy Kershner; and a brother, Marion Canby.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Assembly of God, Tavern Road, Martinsburg, with Pastor Arnold Brown officiating. Burial will be in Tuscarora Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Tuscarora Pike, with military graveside services.

Canby Services
Funeral Services for Calvin C. Canby, Sr., 78, who died Tuesday, July 19, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Bethel Assembly of God with Pastor Arnold Brown officiating. Military graveside services were held at Tuscarora Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Bearers were Tony Battaglini, Douglas Canby, Jim Cloud, Rufus Sine, Earl Smith, and Bill Virts. Honorary bearers were James Butts, Donald Linton, and Jim Price.
Honor Guard members were Jim Grose, Paul Besaw, Richard Seeley, Sam Boynton, Wayne Borden, John Harmison, Harry Michener, Kinnon O. Hope, and Martin Swope.
Scripture was read by Rev. Paul Stanley. A poem titled "Work" by Eliza Cook was read by Dru Misiewicz. A congregational hymn was "What aA Day The Will Be" led by Pastor Garry Felton. A Duet "Where The Roses Never Fade" was sung by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Schoppert. "Amazing Grace" was sung by the graveside. Organist was Mrs. Arnold Brown.
