DEATH OF AN OLD SOLDIER
Mr. William Butts an old Union soldier and
well known resident of this county died very
suddenly at his home near the foot of the
mountain Wednesday about 8 o'clock from the
affirmatives of old age. He had only been
sick three days and at no time was his
condition thought to be serious, and his
death was thus a great shock to the
residents of that community who held him in
high esteem. He is well known in this city
and was here transacting business last
Saturday, at which time he seemed to be in
the best of health.
He was a member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of
the Republic) having served in the company
commanded by Captain Peter Tabler of this
county. He joined the company near the
close of the war and was in the service only
a few months when the war came to a close.
He has been receiving a pension for a number
of years, and this was his chief support, he
being too feeble to work. He was aged about
72 years. For a number of years he was a
truckman and a gardner and by his marketing
here he became known to many of the
residents of this city.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Ellen
(Snyder) Butts, and two children Sallie
Helferstay and one son Elisha Butts both
residents of the county.
He was preceded in death by his first wife
Anna M. (Lamon) Butts and his second wife
Jane R. (Witherow) Butts a son James Butts
and a daughter Ada (Butts) Myers.
Burial will be at the Tuscarora Church
cemetery Martinsburg.
