Elsie Louise Smith Brown

Mrs. Elsie Louise Smith Brown, wife of Lee Allen Brown, Route 1, well-known churchwoman of the Tuscarora section, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday in King’s Daughters Hospital. She had been in ill health for some time, and seriously ill for four weeks.

She was born in Berkeley County November 17, 1909, daughter of Jonathan (John) W. and Lillie Gray Collis Smith. Mrs. Brown was active in all phases of Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, teacher and pianist in the church school, church historian, member of the choir and a member of the Christian Endeavor. She was a past president and had served in all capacities of the Women of the Church.

In her early life she taught at Smith School. For a number of years she was a seasonal employee of the C. H. Musselman Division of the Pet Milk Corp., and was a teacher’s aide in the Head Start program. She was also interested in the 4-H program and a former leader in its program.

She is survived at the home by her husband, whom she married 37 years ago; her stepmother, Mrs. John W. (Mary) Smith, Route 1; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lillie) Hoover, Route 1; a son Jonathan Allen Brown, Route 1; two grandchildren, Rhonda Lynn and William Todd Hoover; a brother, William C. Smith, Route 1, and two sisters, Mrs. Vince (Martha) Miller, Route 1, and Mrs. W. Gray (Mary Ellen) Dalzell, Helmet, Calif., and a number of nieces and nephews.

A brother, James B. Smith, and a sister, Margaret Smith, preceded her in death.

Services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church by her pastor, the Rev. W H. Jarrett, assisted by the Rev. David G. Coffey and the Rev. Dennis Reedy. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Elders of the church will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the Brown Funeral Home today and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family will meet at the home of her son-in-law and daughter at 1:30 p.m. before going to the church.

It is suggested that memorial remembrances take the form of contributions to the Tuscarora Church building fund.

Services for Mrs. Elsie Louise Smith Brown, wife of Lee Allen Brown, Route 1, were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church by the Rev. William H. Jarrett; assisted by the Rev. David G. Coffey and the Rev. Dennis Reedy, with interment in the church cemetery.

Bearers, all elders of the church, were Francis Bradt, David Catrow, Lyle Noll, Willis A. Roberson, Harold Cushwa and Dayton Canby.

The services were largely attended.
