Berkeley County Meals On Wheels
Berkeley County Meals on Wheels is a non-profit, non-sectarian service for the homebound, elderly, handicapped, and the convalescing citizens of our community, giving many the option of living independently and outside institutional care for as long as possible, by delivering a hot nutritious meal five days a week.
The program, in Berkeley County, started on May 3, 1971, with two clients. Today, on average, 130 meals are delivered each weekday.
While the cost of producing the meal is $3.94, clients, who pay full price, are only charged $2.85. In addition, twenty-five percent of the clients receive help with their meal payment. Monies to supplement the difference between income from cliennts and the actual cost of the program are provided by United Way Funding, a small Emergency Food and Shelter Program stipend and donations from organizations, churches, and individuals.
