Massanetta Springs
Since 1922, Massanetta
Springs, outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia, has served Presbyterians through its
beautiful natural resources and thoughtful programs. In the summer of
1922, the events included the Presbyterian Young People’s Conference, the School
of Missions for Men and Women, the Bible Conference, the Training School for
Sunday School Teachers and Officers and Dedication Week. The Bible Conference,
that first summer, drew 4,000 people. The development of programs continued with
the opening of Camp Massanetta in 1956, which provides an outdoor Christian
camping experience for children and youth.
Today, Massanetta Springs provides a place for rest, discovery and rejuvenation
through worship, nurture and fellowship, inviting all to share in the grace and
hospitality of Christ. To this end, they provide a number of camps for
children and youth in Camp Massanetta. They offer a variety of conferences
including Bible, Church Music, Middle School, Family, Adult, Women and Men.
This year’s Bible Conference is the 80th Annual.
Miss Elsie Catrow remembers her brother driving her, and Lillie Largent and
Jonathan Brown’s Aunt Anna Brown and a young lady from Tabler Presbyterian
Church down to Massanetta Springs in their family’s 1931 Dodge. She
remembers with particular fondness walking up the mountain at sunset for vespers
and how beautiful she thought the setting was. She also remembers that the
young lady from Tabler became homesick and that Elsie’s mother told them that if
David had to come down to get the girl from Tabler, they would all have to come
home.
Tuscarora’s history is intertwined with Massanetta Springs and we continue to
love, and enjoy it and support it.
