Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, by William Booth, who had been a Methodist minister.  The Army's work combines a spiritual and social ministry that strives to maintain a clear and consistent witness to the Christian faith, hand in hand with a varied social ministry to people, no matter what their race, creed or class.

The Salvation Army came to Berkeley County in 1905 and has been here ever since.  Every summer numerous children spend one week each, free of charge, at Camp Tomahawk near Hedgesville, West Virginia.  The cost of the program is $180 per camper.  The Army has many different programs for children and they also provide toys at Christmas.  Each year many individuals and families are helped with their utility bills, with the cost of needed medicine, transportation, food and clothing, and furniture and household items.
